Scope

This tutorial covers the process to set up a POP3 email account in Microsoft® Outlook Express 6 for Windows XP.

For setting up your email account in other email programs, please refer to the Tutorial overview.

Requirements

In order to use your email account with Outlook Express, you will need the following information which can be obtained from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or Web Hosting Provider.
SiriuS clients have received this information in their welcome email. If you lost the information, please contact us and we will resend the required inormation ASAP (SiriuS clients only).

You will need the following information:

  • your email address
  • your account name (for SiriuS clients that is the same as your full email address)
  • your email password
  • the incoming mailserver(POP3 or IMAP) address
  • the outgoing mailserver (SMTP) address

Setting up your email account

Start Outlook Express. Go to Start - All Programs. Locate Outlook Express and click it.

Click on Tools and select Accounts

In the Internet Accounts window click the 'Mail' tab, choose 'Add' and click 'Mail...'.

In the Internet Connection Wizard window that opens now enter your name and click 'Next'.

Now enter your email address and click 'Next'.

Next you enter the addresses of your incoming and outgoing mail server.
First choose the type of the incoming mail server.
For SiriuS clients (and for most ISP's) that is POP3.
After your entered the information click 'Next'.

Now enter your account name and your email password.
For SiriuS clients the Account name is the same as your full email address.
If you don't want to type your password every time you collect your email
check the 'Remember password' box.
Unless your ISP told you to check the box 'Log on using Secure Password Authetication (SPA)
leave this box unchecked.
SiriuS clients should leave the box unchecked.
When you're done click 'Next'.

The next screen informs you that you have entered all the required information .
Click 'Finish'to save your settings.

You're not completely done yet.
Back in the Internet Accounts window, select the account you just setup and click on 'Properties'.

In the Properties window enter a name for the email account.
Next click on the "Servers' tab

In the servers window SiriuS clients need to check the box 'My server requires authentication'.
Check the welcome email from your ISP to find out if your mail server requires authentication.
When you're done, click 'OK'.

You finished setting up your email account. Congratulations!
Click on 'Close' and start using Outlook Express.
