Many countries have implemented plastic bag charges and plastic straw bans while action to phase out fossil fuels lags far behind, due in part to the inertia of the huge oil and gas companies that dominate the sector. How will they adapt as fossil fuel demand wanes with the rise of renewable energy and battery power? The answer is plastic — and that shift is already well underway.
Most of the plastic that exists today has been made in the last decade. The environment appears to be drowning in plastic for the same reason that global temperatures continue to rise — fossil fuels have remained cheap and abundant.
Cheap plastic is made using chemicals produced in the process of making fuel. Petroleum refining transforms crude oil extracted from the ground into gasoline, producing ethane as a byproduct.
A decade ago, the advent of fracking — hydraulic fracturing of oil or natural gas — made the raw materials for plastics significantly cheaper. Fracking shale gas produces lots of ethane , which is turned into ethylene — the building block for many hard-to-recycle plastic products, like packaging films, sachets and bottles. There are few facilities worldwide that can dispose of or recycle this kind of plastic efficiently.
In much of the world, a lot of it goes directly into the environment. Global plastic production is expected to double in the next 15 years even as demand for gasoline wanes. Electric vehicles and more efficient forms of public transport mean gasoline demand is falling. The oil and gas companies who own these refineries are instead gearing up to turn what is now excess fuel into plastics for packaging. As demand for gasoline continues to decline in future, more plastics will be made directly from crude oil.
These are chemicals like acetylene, benzene, ethane, ethylene, methane, propane, and hydrogen, which form the basis for thousands of other products, including plastics. The environmental consequences of making even more plastic from crude oil will be significant.
More plastic pollution will enter watercourses and the ocean, while amping up production will accelerate global emissions. Read more: Plastic warms the planet twice as much as aviation — here's how to make it climate-friendly. Both transporting the crude oil to make it and then disposing of the plastic by incineration generates emissions.
Achieving net zero emissions from incinerating plastic packaging means eliminating all non-essential uses of petroleum-based plastic by , following a peak in packaging and other single use, disposable plastics in Replacing traditional plastics with new materials made from renewable sources like corn starch could help, as could developing a new infrastructure for industrial plastic composting.

Perhaps the greatest trend driving our markets is the move towards mobility and connectivity - on the road, in the home and office, and on the street. Today, our plastics create components like the tiny connectors that give mobile phones their incredible functionality. Now, as we learn more about how to integrate electronics into plastic materials, these same solutions could be used in cars. Speaking of which….
Plastic Detection in Food Production
Drinking straws and polythene bags may be bearing the brunt of the backlash, but the true scourge of single-use plastics is our sheer overreliance on them. These alternatives do more than stem the growing tide of plastics: they also address issues such as safely housing a growing population, offsetting carbon emissions, and returning nutrients to the earth. Stone wool comes from natural igneous rock—the kind that forms after lava cools — and a steelmaking byproduct called slag; these substances are melted together and spun into fibres, a little like candyfloss. Unlike fibreglass insulation made with recycled glass , or foamed plastic the conductive materials often used to block heat transfer in attics, roofs and crawlspaces , stone wool can be engineered to boast unique properties, including fire resilience, acoustic and thermal capabilities, water repellancy and durability in extreme weather conditions. The Rockwool Group is a leading manufacturer of stone wool insulation, running production facilities in Europe, North America and Asia. As wildfires and floods increase in frequency and severity, Stone Wool may also give homeowners an extra measure of safety in natural disasters. MycoWorks , a team of creative engineers, designers and scientists, is working to extract the vegetative tissues of mushrooms and solidify them into new structures, curating fungi as one might other organic materials like rubber or cork.

Providing guidelines for implementing sustainable practices for traditional petroleum based plastics, biobased plastics, and recycled plastics, Sustainable Plastics and the Environment explains what sustainable plastics are, why sustainable plastics are needed, which sustainable plastics to use, and how manufacturing companies can integrate them into their manufacturing operations.
Plastic is everywhere in our lives, from soft-drink bottles to water pipes, carryout cartons to clothing, vitamin bottles to pool toys. Yet few of us understand what plastics are or the processes required to transform raw materials into products we can use. The production of the plastics we use in electronics, manufacturing, construction, textiles, food packaging and other industries begins with resins. Resins are derived from organic materials, most often crude oil and natural gas. A process called chemical polymerization turns them into chains of molecules called polymers, very large molecules consisting of thousands or even millions of atoms bonded together in a repeating pattern. Different polymers are combined to form resins, each with distinct properties and characteristics. Resins are processed and molded into products we can identify. At this stage, colors and functional additives can be introduced to achieve the properties desired for the end-use product. Additives are often done in masterbatches, a concentrated mix of chemicals or pigments encapsulated in a carrier material that is then cooled and processed into a form that can be added to the plastic resin.

Plastic and rubber are maybe two of the most common materials in food production. They are used in the processing equipment, tools, protective clothing and in the food packaging, of course. Even though these materials help food producers to maintain high sanitation levels and achieve more cost-efficient production, they also possess contamination hazards that in worst cases can lead up to product recalls. Production equipment with plastic or rubber parts possesses possibly one of the most common risks for causing contamination. These contaminations have led to massive recalls, where the producers needed to call back tens of thousands of products, not to mention the brand damage caused. Plastic and rubber are two of the most common materials in food production, but also possibly two of the trickiest contaminants to find in a food product.
